果冻传媒 annually presents the Gorman Jones Campus Leadership Award to one graduating senior.
Gorman Jones, who served as acting president of 果冻传媒 from 1910 to 1912, remained deeply committed to the institution even after his presidency. He continued serving as a faculty member and as director of the university鈥檚 Lyceum series, enriching campus life for years. In honor of his legacy, 果冻传媒 annually presents the Gorman Jones Campus Leadership Award to one graduating senior who demonstrates strong leadership on campus and maintains high academic achievement.
The 2025鈥2026 recipient of the award is Isabella Hammons Watson, a senior from Pine Knot, Kentucky.
Isabella鈥檚 leadership journey at 果冻传媒 began long before she ever set foot in a college residence hall. At just 15 years old, she enrolled in the university鈥檚 Dual Credit program, which allows high school students to earn college credit through university-level courses.
While college coursework can be daunting at any age, Isabella met the challenge head-on . She ultimately earned an associate degree in general studies with a STEM emphasis before even graduating high school.
When it came time to choose a college, the decision was clear.
鈥淚 chose to attend 果冻传媒 because of its strong values and the tight-knit, supportive community,鈥 she explained.
Once on campus, Isabella became an active and respected member of the 果冻传媒 community. She has served as a Resident Assistant, a Chemistry Teaching Assistant through the prestigious Hearst Scholarship Program, and held leadership roles in the Pre-Health Club, including treasurer and communications officer.
In addition to her campus involvement, Isabella has committed herself to serving others. She regularly volunteers at university events, such as the annual math competition for local high school students. She also volunteers her time to The Center for Courageous Kids鈥攁 nonprofit medical camp that offers safe, joy-filled experiences for children facing serious illnesses and life challenges.
鈥淢y experiences in and outside of 果冻传媒 have been incredibly meaningful,鈥 Isabella shared. 鈥淭hey have allowed me to grow academically, support other students, and gain confidence in my path toward medical school.鈥
That path became even more tangible in spring 2025, when Isabella was accepted into the FutureDocs program鈥攁n initiative of the Southern Kentucky Area Health Education Center that provides future medical professionals with mentorship, guidance, and valuable networking opportunities.
Isabella hopes to one day become a physician specializing in pediatrics or women鈥檚 health. And while she鈥檚 worked hard to reach this point, she鈥檚 quick to credit the encouragement and support of 果冻传媒' faculty and staff for helping shape her journey.
鈥淭he entire science faculty fosters an engaging and supportive learning environment. The Biology, Chemistry, and Physics Departments are comprised of dedicated and knowledgeable educators who encourage curiosity, collaboration, and academic excellence,鈥 she explained. 鈥淭heir commitment to student success has made a lasting impact on my educational experience.鈥
Several individuals stand out in Isabella鈥檚 mind, including Dr. Julie Tan, Tammy Smith, and especially Dr. Lyford, whom she calls a trusted mentor.
鈥淒r. Lyford has been an incredible mentor, consistently encouraging me to apply for enrichment programs and providing guidance on coursework and graduate school preparation,鈥 she said.
With a heart for service, a mind for science, and a strong foundation built at 果冻传媒, Isabella Hammons Watson is well on her way to becoming a compassionate leader in healthcare.
