������ý has introduced an Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) to meet the evolving occupational and healthcare needs of individuals, families, and communities. The new entry-level OTD program is designed to prepare skilled occupational therapists who promote health, well-being, and participation in meaningful daily activities across diverse populations.  

This graduate-level degree is intended for students with at least 90 undergraduate credits or who hold a bachelor’s degree or higher and are seeking to advance into a healthcare profession focused on client-centered and evidence-based occupational therapy practice. 

A 9-Semester Occupational Therapy Curriculum Focused on Clinical Excellence 

Students enrolled in the OTD program at ������ý complete a 9-semester program designed to prepare them as client-centered, evidence-informed, and occupation-focused practitioners, leaders, and scholars in the field of occupational therapy. 

“From day one, students engage in hands-on labs, real-world case simulations, and collaborative learning experiences that build strong clinical reasoning and evidence-based decision-making skills,” said Dr. Vidya Pingale, program director and associate professor. 

The program prioritizes students’ comprehensive preparation for licensure exams, ongoing professional development, and most importantly, student wellness. 

“Graduates of the ������ý OTD program are prepared to thrive in hospitals, schools, rehabilitation centers, community programs, private practice, and emerging practice areas,” Dr. Pingale added. 

Strong Career Outlook for Occupational Therapists 

Students pursuing the OTD degree are entering a growing healthcare field with strong salary potential and employment demand. 

According to the  (BLS), the median annual pay for occupational therapists in 2024 is $98,340, and employment in the profession is projected to grow 14 percent from 2024 to 2034, much faster than the average for all occupations. 

������ý’ OTD program is delivered in both accelerated and traditional academic pathways designed to reduce overall tuition costs while maintaining the depth and rigor of a doctoral-level healthcare education. This structure enhances the overall return on investment, enabling students to complete their degrees efficiently, reduce financial burden, and transition into high-demand occupational therapy roles with confidence. 

Addressing Healthcare Needs in Kentucky and Beyond 

In addition to advancing individual careers, ������ý’ OTD program aims to address critical healthcare needs in Kentucky and across the United States.  

, reflecting ongoing challenges in access to care, rural healthcare delivery, addiction recovery, and chronic disease management. Occupational therapists are uniquely positioned to improve functional outcomes and quality of life in communities facing these barriers.  

The ������ý’ OTD program is designed to improve health outcomes by equipping students to become skilled, compassionate practitioners who may choose to serve in rural, underserved, and vulnerable populations. 

“Through intentional service-learning, community engagement, and capstone projects, students are prepared to become compassionate healthcare leaders,” explained Dr. Pingale. “The OTD program embodies the ������ý’ mission by expanding access to healthcare education and improving quality of life for individuals and families—particularly in rural, underserved, and vulnerable communities.” 

ACOTE Accreditation Process 

The entry-level OTD program at ������ý has applied for accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA). 

The ACOTE accreditation process includes three primary stages: 

1. Candidacy Application 
2. Preaccreditation Review 
3. On-Site Visit 

University of the ������ý will submit its application for candidacy in August 2026. Once candidacy status is granted, the program may admit students and will enter the Preaccreditation phase. A self-study report will be submitted, and an on-site visit will be scheduled prior to graduation of the initial cohort.  

While candidacy status does not guarantee accreditation, it indicates that the program’s resources and development plan appear capable of meeting ACOTE Standards for a Doctoral-Degree-Level Educational Program for the Occupational Therapist. For additional information about ACOTE accreditation, . 

Upon receiving the accreditation, graduates of the Occupational Therapy Doctorate Program at ������ý are eligible to take the national certification examination for occupational therapists, administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). Additionally, all states require licensure to practice, which is usually based on the results of the NBCOT Certification Examination.
